Republic of the Marshall Islands Yacht Safety Advisory 4-16

By Rupert Connor

The Republic of the Marshall Islands (RMI) has issued an advisory related to United States Coast Guard (USCG) policy letter 15-04 titled, “Guidance on Port State Control Examinations for Foreign Flagged Yachts.”

The policy letter outlines specific procedures for examinations of all foreign flagged vessels measuring 300 GT or more and operating in US navigable waters. Non-compliance to the USCG examination requirements may lead to control actions by the USCG Port State Control Officers.

The RMI Maritime Administrator is investigating the implementation of a compliance policy for certain private yachts impacted by the letter. As an interim measure, private yachts may opt for a voluntary certification for compliance to an established standard, such as the RMI Yacht Code.

Additional information for voluntary compliance is available here .
