South Georgia and The Sandwich Islands
Discovered by James Cook in the late 1770''s the islands are dotted with old whaling stations. In 1916 Ernest Shackelton''s expedition became stranded on Elephant Island and he made his epic journey to reach one of these whaling stations to enable the rescue of his party. On a later expedition he died on board a ship off South Georgia, and his final resting place is Grytviken. South Georgia is also renowned for its breathaking scenery , soaring cliffs and vast colonies of king penguins.
